Tic tac toe is the screen-free game every kid already knows how to play. This winter version comes with 12 solid hardwood playing pieces in the two designs you choose, so the board can hold cherry penguins against maple polar bears, Christmas trees against snowflakes, or any other pair from the four winter designs.

The Christmas trees and penguins are cut from solid cherry, and the polar bears and snowflakes from solid maple. Pairing a cherry design with a maple design gives the clearest light and dark contrast, so the two woods do the work of X's and O's. A same-wood pair works too, and a child tells those pieces apart by shape.

The board is laser-cut from Baltic birch and engraved with the name you choose, and each recessed space keeps the pieces from sliding mid-game on a kitchen table, a picnic blanket, or an airplane tray table. Every piece is laser-engraved and finished by hand with food-safe beeswax and jojoba oil. At about 2 inches tall, the pieces are easy for small hands to pick up and place. The trees go back in the bag after Christmas, and the penguins, polar bears, and snowflakes keep the game in season through the end of winter.

MATERIALS Baltic birch board with solid cherry and solid maple playing pieces, finished by hand with food-safe beeswax and jojoba oil. Wood is a natural material, so each piece may vary slightly in grain and tone. We think that's part of the charm.
