A fourth atlas - slate grey-blue, like the sky before a storm - appears on the shelf, and Asha, Kian, and Ixchel arrive in the Metaphor Highlands, walking open hill country where every path traces a figurative bridge from one idea to another. They are met by Yennefer, a Polish-born wanderer-Keeper who has spent forty years walking these hills, mapping every figurative move that language permits. The Silence has now learned to attack relations - the mappings that connect one domain of thought to another - leaving the language flat, literal, and increasingly unable to mean more than it says. Yennefer teaches the children the sixth voice of restoration: the voice that names the figurative bridge itself.
