For Alex's sixth birthday grandpa gave him a box with black and white squares painted on it. Inside the box Alex found little black and white figures that didn't resemble his toy soldiers at all. Grandpa then arranged the figures from the box on the black and white squares and, to spark Alex's interest in the thrilling game of chess, told him an amusing tale about black and white Kings, their kingdoms, and their rivalrous troops, who resolved their disputes and disagreements in through tournaments. The tournaments between the two kingdoms were not simple affairs. They were governed by strict tournament rules that every participant without exception had to obey. Winning the tournament was not an easy task. Besides the necessary courage, considerable military cunning, skillfulness, and knowledge were needed to navigate the battlefield. Alex liked grandpa's tale about black and white Kings and was eager to learn the tournament rules so that he could participate in these exciting battles himself.
