Pepper the puffin loves his rocky island home. But when a "terrible storm" sweeps him away, he lands in a strange, unfamiliar forest.

Right away, Pepper feels like he doesn't belong. He meets Rosie the rabbit, who is kind, but also Squeaky the squirrel, who is not. "Go away!" Squeaky chatters. "You don't belong here! Your beak is too colorful, and you walk funny!"

Pepper feels "very useless" as he tries to help with forest chores, but his sea-bird skills just get in the way . But when Squeaky's entire basket of winter acorns tumbles into a deep pond, the forest animals don't know what to do. Pepper, however, knows exactly what to do.
