US states generally follow a combination of NFPA standards and OSHA regulations for portable fire alarm and extinguishers. The foundational code for extinguisher selection, installation, and maintenance is NFPA 10, while where and when they are required is dictated by the NFPA Life Safety Code and local fire codes. There are other codes that are relevant to fire protection as well.

In Ohio, it is the Department of Commerce (Division of State Fire Marshal - Bureau of Testing and Registration) that administers the Ohio Fire Protection Exam. The exam is prepared from the Ohio Administrative Code, the Ohio Building Code as well as a number of NFPA standards.

This book provides practice questions with explanations on these codes, standards, rules and guidelines.
