Galileo Galilei, a mathematician, astronomer, physicist, philosopher, engineer, and good lutenist, the first of six children of Vincenzo Galilei, a known lutenist, composer, and music theorist, and Giulia Ammannati, enrolled in 1580 (age 16) at the University of Pisa for a medical degree, but after that, by chance, attended a course on geometry, and then he moved to study mathematics and natural philosophy. In 1589, age 25, Galileo was appointed to the chair of mathematics at the University of Pisa, and made significant discoveries in both fundamental science, and applied science. His interests included the study of mathematics, astronomy and medicine. Additionally, Galileo worked in practical hydraulic engineering, obtaining a patent from the Venetian Republic for a horse-powered water pump in 1594, at age 30.
