Can We Keep It? tells the true story of the cedar waxwing. The character Jeanne is Bobbie's younger sister. The character Mom is their actual Mom. In the same month but fifty-four years later, Bobbie was visited by a flock of approximately fifty cedar waxwings. The three hundred photos she took of them served as models for the illustrations she created for Can We Keep It?
