Among the Farmyard People is a charming classic of children's animal fiction, bringing the barnyard to life through stories of hens, ducks, geese, cows, horses, pigs, sheep, dogs, cats, and other familiar farm creatures. Clara Dillingham Pierson gives each animal a personality, a problem, and a place in the busy world of the farmyard, where young readers can see everyday animal life transformed into a series of gentle, memorable lessons about curiosity, kindness, patience, work, pride, foolishness, and growing up.

Like Pierson's other "People" books, this volume blends storybook imagination with close attention to animal habits and rural life. The animals talk and reason in ways children can enjoy, but their adventures are rooted in recognisable farm behaviour: nesting, hatching, feeding, herding, quarrelling, caring for young, keeping watch, and learning the customs of the barn, pasture, pond, and yard. The result is a warm early-reader and read-aloud book that encourages children to notice animals carefully and to think of the natural world as full of living neighbours.

This SMK edition is well suited for readers of classic children's literature, animal stories, farmyard tales, nature writing for children, early chapter books, and family read-aloud books. Among the Farmyard People remains an appealing introduction to farm animals, country life, and the old-fashioned pleasure of stories that teach without losing their gentleness and charm.
