OVERVIEW

This cross-curricular homeschool unit explores prehistoric cave paintings as a gateway to history, art, writing, and critical thinking. Designed for teaching multiple grade levels together, the unit allows students of different ages and abilities to study the same theme while working at appropriate challenge levels.

Students begin by learning about some of the world’s most famous cave art sites, including the Lascaux Cave in France and the Altamira Cave in Spain. Through discussion and visual exploration, learners examine why prehistoric people created art and what it reveals about their daily lives.

Topics include: Early human creativity Exploration of natural pigments and early art techniques Creation of cave-style paintings using limited color palettes Investigation of natural materials used for pigments (charcoal, clay, minerals) Creative writing and journal prompts to explore opinion and imagination Research reports (adapted by grade level) Vocabulary development and oral narration

This unit is intentionally flexible: Younger learners (K–3) focus on storytelling, hands-on art, narration, and simple facts. Middle grades (4–6) complete short research projects, write descriptive paragraphs, and analyze symbolism. Older students (7–12) conduct deeper research on archaeology, symbolism, and cultural anthropology, and may write analytical essays or create presentations.

Assignments are tiered so all students engage in the same topic but demonstrate understanding at their developmental level.
